Nadia district is located between North 24 Parganas District on the south, Murshidabad
District on tne north, The Hooghly on the west and Bangladesh on the east. Due to its rich irrigation facilities in the southern portion of this district, agriculture is the principal occupation of the
inhabitants here. Besides, there are good number of handloom weavers and rural artisans. Handloom weaving here is traditionally famous for its design quality and workmanship. Clay modeling of Krishnagar is
also famous.Population explosion of the district was due to its proximity to Bangladesh border and uninterrupted influx of refugees from that country during the last three decades. As a result, the
socio-economic pattern of this district has thoroughly changed during this period giving rise to a wide ranging social tension. Population of this district, being 46,03,756 as per Census 2001, has increased
to such an extent that health care facilities are always felt an apology to the actual need. Ultimately, the erstwhile Health Care System fell back upon the new concept of SHSDP – II with the introduction of
this Project in early 1996. The objectives in brief are to improve efficiency in the allocation and use of health resource through policy and institutional development and to improve the performance of the
Health Care System at the first referral level. |
