With a view to improve nutritional and health status of children in the age group of 0-6 years and to impart proper nutrition and health education to the mothers belonging to the weaker section of our society so that psychological, physical and social development of the child is achieved, the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) programme (sponsored by Govt.of India) was launched in this district in Krishnagar-II block in the year 1980-81 by the Relief & Social Welfare Deptt. (welfare branch), W.B. through Social Welfare Directorate. Since then concerted efforts in co-ordination with other departments have been on to render package of six basic services to the beneficiaries through A.W. Centres at the village level. During 8 ^th plan period (including annual plan periods for the year 1990-91 & 1991-92) nine projects in Krishnagar-I, Haringhata, Santipur, Ranaghat-I, Chakdah, Nakashipara, Karimpur-II, Karimpur-I and Nabadwip blocks had been sanctioned. With this nine projects all the 17 blocks of this district had been covered by ICDS programme.

		Balika Samriddhi Yojana (BSY)


	This Yojana, a 100% centrally sponsored scheme, covers girl children in families below the poverty line (BPL), who are born on or after 15^th August, 1997. The girl children eligible under BSY are entitled to get post birth grant amount of 500/- and annual scholarships for each successfully completed year of schooling as per GOI guidelines. The said Grant / Scholarship amounts are deposited in maximum interest bearing accounts opened in the names of the beneficiary girl children and the respective CDPOs, the implementing officers in the rural areas. Gram Panchayet authorities are responsible for identifying the beneficiaries under BSY in their respective areas. A stipend will be given to those girl child who are attending school and are B.P.L.

		Prime Minister's Gramodaya Yojana (PMGY)



		With the introduction of PMGY in the year 2000-01 in order to achieve the objective of sustainable human development at the village level, additional central assistance has been provided under SNP component of ICDS. Eradicating mal-nutrition amongst under 3 years children in the families below the poverty line (BPL) by increased nutritional coverage of supplementary feeding of these children through A.W. Centres is the main objective of the programme. Take Home Ration (THR) strategy has been adopted for distribution of foodstuff for the beneficiaries under the said age group. Uncooked dry food costing 1.20 paisa per head per day are given to the children for 25 days in a month. As on 30.06.2003, total A.W. Centres covered under P.M.G.Y. was 2142.



		Construction of A.W.Centres


	District Planning Committee (DPC) proposed construction of 255 nos. of SSK-cum-AWCs under RIDF-VIII and the loan amount for the same has been sanctioned by NABARD in this year, which will be constructed under the supervision of Zilla Parishad. Another 58 A.W.Cs in this district will be constructed under the supervision of Women & Child Dev. & SW, Govt of W.B. under RIDF-VIII
